Petworth House
Main Page
Rebuilt in 1688 by the 'Proud' Duke around the ancient manor house of the Percy family, Petworth today houses
the finest collection of paintings and sculpture in the care of the National Trust. Extra rooms belonging to Lord &
Lady Egremont are open on weekdays only, at no extra charge. In 1999 the medieval chapel and other
parts of the medieval house are on show after extensive building repairs.
If you get the chance to see Petworth House and its contents I would urge you to do so. The Architecture is wonderful
and has fine examples of decor by masters such as Grinling Gibbons. Many Royal Craftsmen were employed in the
rebuilding and refurbishment of Petworth. There are in excess of 300 paintings and 100 sculptures.
For those of you with a specialist interest in Art or/and Architecture repeated visits to absorb its unique atmosphere
and sheer size of the collections are advised. I am fortunate to live within a short drive of the House and
plan repeated trips to the House and grounds.
The highlights of the House and it's Art collection are NOT TO BE MISSED,
and even if you only have an hour or so to visit this breathtaking House you
will not be disappointed with the following;
19 oil paintings by Turner in the Red Room & North Gallery
The Van Dycks in the Square & Little Dining Rooms
Grinling Gibbons' finest limewood carvings in the Carved Room
Louis Laguerre's Grand Staircase murals
The copper in the kitchens
The view from the stone seat at the top of Lawn Hill
