ODDITIES of SUSSEX
The Bexhill Stone

The Bexhill Stone, discovered under the nave floor during restoration
work in 1878, is something of a mystery.
It's thought to be the lid of a reliquary, which was a container for
the relics of a saint. Why it should have been discarded is one puzzle.
Another is its place of origin: the stone itself is of a kind only found
in the north of England, and the elaborate carving suggests a Celtic influence.
