ODDITIES of SUSSEX
Brighton's Royal Spa

Brighton is not known as a spa town, but Dr. F. A. Struve opened an artificial
one here in 1825 on the lines of others he had successfully developed in
Berlin, Leipzig and his home town of Dresden.
He concocted mineral waters which were chemically identical to those of
European spas.
A royal warrant was granted in 1835, and the amenity was thereafter known
as the Royal Spa. The pump room has gone, but the Ionic portico and
the north wall have been restored.
