Victorian License Plates - Eastbourne

Victorian License plate

Once you know that the little iron discs to be found at pavement level in various parts of Eastbourne were Victorian Licence Plates, you can have a little amusement guessing what the letters referred to.  The one above, GCS , indicates that there was once a goat chaise stand.

The principal places to look are near the Wish Tower, outside Eastbourne College in Grange Road, and along the wall of St.Saviour's Church in South Street.  You'll find HCS, BCS, MCS, SPS, SDS and LPS! Work them out for yourself!

Situated on the wall of the promenade facing the bandstand is a memorial plaque to John Wesley Woodward; one of the heroic musicians who went down in the 'Titanic' in April 1912.  He played the cello in the Grand Hotel orchestra, the Duke of Devonshire's orchestra and the Eastbourne municipal orchestra.

Access

At the foot of the wall below the Wish Tower in King Edward's Parade.
