ODDITIES of SUSSEX
Hangleton Dovecote - Hangleton

This 17th-century dovecote stands in the grounds of the oldest secular
building in Brighton and Hove - Hangelton Manor, which was built in 1540.
(The Manor is now a public house)
The walls are several feet thick and there would once have been literally
hundreds of nesting boxes inside reached by a 'potence' or swinging ladder.
Other surviving dovecotes include those at Charleston Manor, near West
Dean; in Motcombe Gardens, Eastbourne; and at Patcham (a scheduled ancient
monument)
