HISTORY of SUSSEX

The Lords Lieutenant of Sussex 1550-1820

By an Act of Parliament which passed in the 46th year of King George III. (cap. 90), the Lord Lieutenant is empowered, with the approbation of His Majesty, to appoint any Deputy Lieutenant to act for him, (which Deputy Lieutenant is called VICE LIEUTENANT,) within the county as Lieutenant thereof during the necessary and unavoidable absence, sickness, or other disability of such Lord Lieutenant, and no longer ; and to appoint any Deputy Lieutenant to act as Lieutenant of any division of such county.

And by another Act of Parliament (55th Geo. III. cap. 65), in case of the illness or absence from the county of the Lieutenant thereof, the Vice Lieutenant is empowered, being authorized for that purpose by the Lieutenant, to grant commissions to officers to serve in the Militia of such county, upon any vacancy which should then happen, in like manner as the Lieutenant thereof, and to do all acts which may be lawfully done by the Lieutenant.

The duty of the Lord Lieutenant, or Vice Lieutenant, and Deputy Lieutenants, is to carry into execution the laws relating to the Militia. The list of Lords Lieutenant for Sussex commences in 1550, 3rd Edward VI., and is as under Lords Lieutenant.
