GEORGE INN
Battle Road, Robertsbridge, Sussex, On A21
It is perhaps coincidence that another haunted pub in Robertsbridge, the
Seven Stars, was originally known as the George and is situated practically
opposite this magnificent inn.
Shirley and Gordon Mannering have held the licence here for some 8 years
and having 'thoroughly cleaned' up the place' and improved the lighting
and heating, have turned the pub into one of the most popular eating places
in the area. Their appetising cold buffet is renowned for its variety, and
the sincere friendliness of the Mannerings and their staff makes a visit
here a welcome occasion.
One of the puzzles for Shirley, however, has been the inexplicable bumps
heard in the large room over the bars. 'It sounds like someone with his
legs tied together moving around the empty room', she told me in March 1973.
But many people have heard the noises which occur 'nearly always at lunch
time'. The room is used for weddings and other similar functions and the
belief is that the unseen entity does not agree with marriage.
The building was constructed in the 17th century and was originally an
old coaching inn. Who the 'blooming bumper' is, however, no one knows.
