Over a hundred years ago in this small hamlet a 16 year old servant girl from one of the large manors, probably in Bridge Park, used to meet her boyfriend in a barn next to the village hall.

 

Unfortunately the love affair ended in disaster with the young lad deserting his lover on finding her pregnant and the girl hanging herself from the beams in the loft.

 

Often in the ensuing years ghostly screams and despondent moans have been heard issuing from the empty building as unpleasant reminders of the incident.

 

Mrs. Turner, now of Heathfield, was one of the villagers to have heard the cries as recently as 1969 and said it was really most distressing. The sounds are heard just before ten in the evening
