BEGGARS BUSH
Best Beech, Near Wadhurst. Off B2100
Joining the B2100 from Wadhurst to Mark Cross, about 100 yards from the
Bestbeech Hill cross-roads, a narrow lane leads back to the secondary road
which joins the A266. Early in the 1960's and occasionally since, the wraith
of an old man carrying a heavy sack has been seen in a lane near this private
house. He is described as wearing a long brown 'coat' and is obviously labouring
pretty heftily under the weight of his load.
He comes from the front garden of the house, walks about 50ft along the
road and vanishes on coming to an old gateway. Seen only during early autumn
evenings, he is believed to be the ghost of a local poacher who was shot
in the early 19th century by an irate game-keeper, though some state that
because the fruit is always ripe when he is witnessed there may well be
a simpler explanation.
An old tramp was found in the garden of the house many years ago suffering
from a bad fall after 'scrumping' a few pounds of apples. He died before
reaching the hospital.
