FOLKLORE of SUSSEX
Once upon a time, there lived at Lyminster, near Arundel, a dragon whose home
was in a bottomless pool near the church. Knucker Hole, as the pool is called,
is a curious place in that it never freezes in winter and never evaporates
in summer.
In ancient times, the dragon would emerge from the pool and seize upon
livestock and unwary herders, then carry off his victims for a leisurely
dinner on the Arun marshes .
Eventually, so the story goes, the reign of terror was brought to an end
when a knight in shining armour slew the fiery beast and accordingly claimed
the hand of the princess as his reward.
