FOLKLORE of SUSSEX
There is another Manhood legend that claims the Selsey peninsula as the
sight at which King Canute ordered the sea to recede.
From the sacred shore I stand on I command thee to retreat;
Venture not, though stormy rebel, to approach thy master's seat;
Ocean, be thou still'. I bid thee come not nearer to my feet'.
(William Makepeace Thackery)
Although the scene of this incident is disputed by other sea-bound counties,
it is recorded that Canute did live at one time at Bosham, and his eight
year old daughter died there and was buried in the church.
