The Stones of St.Andrews, Steyning

 

 

Steyning church tomb stone

The plaque above the stone reads;


'Ancient coffin lid - observe the two incised crosses indicating the burial of an important person. This lid possibly covered the body of King Ethelwulf who was buried here in 858AD. He was subsequently exhumed and re-interred at Winchester near his son King Alfred.
