Other Points of note
Other things of great interest in Sompting church are the pre-Conquest
carved stones, in all possibility part of the decoration of the earliest church,
some of which have been re-used and incorporated into the present building.
In the nave are two pieces of a wall arcade, the decoration of which is loose
interlaced foliage around a semicircular arch. There is another portion forming
the head of a recess in the north wall of the chancel, which has similar decoration.
Shown above are two more stained glass windows at Sompting - dedicated by
patrons of the church
Also in the chancel are the following fragments of friezes with interlaced
palmettes: two headstones of a triangular piscina, the head of a recess in
the north wall, and the heads of two recesses in the east wall.
Built into the external filling of an arch of the former north-west chapel
in the north wall of the nave is a fragment bearing scroll ornament. The arcades
doubtless formed part of a decorative scheme embracing the internal or external
church walls. Whatever their precise use, they are certainly noteworthy examples
of Saxon sculpture.
The splendid stone face as a corbel in the north chapel, there are also
beautiful stone capitals here as you can see below
The capitals shown here are on the arch at the tower entrance from the nave

The font at Sompting church is made from Sussex Marble, highly polished
and Norman in origin. It stands on a newer base in the south transept.
