Situated in the Old Town, just off the High Street you will find the church
of St. Clement. Chiefly decorative with a heavy battlemented tower.
St.Clement in Hastings
Unfortunately, when we visited this church there was scaffolding in place
on the tower and it was locked. So no pictures of the internal details and
fittings until such time we revisit the area.
Interesting architectural details are the carved capitals of the tower arches
and the corbels of the tower vaulting. Fittings include a fine perpendicular
font with instruments of the Passion; four-seated sedilia constructed from
pieces of its perpendicular predecessor; pieces of an oak screen found in
a nearby house; two handsome candle chandeliers, a gift from the Barons of
the Cinque Ports in 1763, and made from the silver of their staves which,
in accordance with ancient privilege, supported the canopy at the Coronation
of George III in 1761; A wall monument to Thomas Delves, a Baron of the Cinque
Ports, 1669.
Another claim to fame is the story of the canon ball in the tower - see
here for the story
