View of St. Andrews looking towards Lewes
This fine church set under the shadow of Mount Caburn (480 feet above the
Channel), has been here since Norman times with many alterations since then.
The Nave is Norman with blocked windows in the north arcade, and the aisles
were rebuilt, probably in the Early English period.
View of the interior
The Clerestory and Chancel are 14th century and decorative The Font and
Tower on documentary evidence dates to about 1541. The south nave arcade has
massive piers and moulded square abaci with unusual decoration. There is a
charming remembrance window on the left of the door and there are two stone
heads on the arches, one with a tongue that has been 'out' for 700 years.
The font at St. Andrews is 15th century
At nearby Iford Hill which lies to the south of Beddingham, a Late Bronze
Age settlement was systematically and thoroughly excavated from 1949 to 1953.
The findings revealed that the site was at one time a large farm and many
enclosures and hut platforms cut back into the hill-side were discovered on
the site.
There was a Monastary at Beddingham in time of Offa 757-796.
