Brass Rubbings of Sussex

Etchingham - Echyngham Family

There are six fine brasses. That of the founder has unhappily lost its head; it is the oldest brass in Sussex bearing a date, and has an inscription in French which says;

Of earth I was made and formed
And to earth I have returned

He died in 1388. A fine brass under a triple canopy is of Lady Joan Echyngham between her husband and her son; it is 1444 and one of the finest brasses in Sussex.

Two tiny brasses of 1450 and 1480 are probably of two sisters; very sweet they look dressed in flowing kirtles, an unconventional pair.
