Brass Rubbings of Sussex

Ardingly - The Culpeppers

A fine group of brasses are in the chancel. One shows the last of the Wakehursts with his wife Elizabeth, proudly set under a double canopy. He was a member of Parliament 500 years ago.

Here too are brasses of two Culpepper brothers who married two sisters 400 years ago. Richard in Tudor armour has three coloured shields; Nicholas and his wife have one of the biggest families recorded on a brass. The children stand in two groups, ten sons with long hair and eight daughters in tight gowns.

Within the altar rails is a brass portrait of Elizabeth Culpepper (below), whose husband built the great Elizabethan house, and there is a brass of a little Culpepper girl of seven, wearing a lace cap and veil, with long flowing hair. This portrait of Elizabeth shows her almost lost in a mass of richly embroidered robes.
