Brass Rubbings of Sussex

Burton - The Gorings

The brasses here are memorials to the Gorings, who were once the Lords of Burton.

Above his altar tomb Sir John of 1520 is shown kneeling in armour, with these words written about him;

Remeber not, O Lord, the offences of my youth, nor my ignorances

And kneeling at a table with an open book is Lady Elizabeth Goring, who has lost her husband since she came here in 1558.

She is wearing over her dress a tabard covered with heraldic designs, and it is said that in this brass, Sussex has the only known example of a woman in such a costume.
