CHURCHES of SUSSEX

Warnham Monument

This monument shows John Caryll, his wife and their nine children. He died a year or two before Shakespeare.

He grew rich by making iron in the heart of the Sussex forest; but his family supported the Stuarts and brought themselves to ruin.

He is in armour, with his curly hair and beard; she has a ruff and farthingale, and below them kneels their eldest son. Behind him are his brothers with curly hair, buttoned tunics, long frocks and skulls in their hands; and facing them are their sisters, the youngest with with garlands of flowers in their hair and the little one with a skull.

It is one of the most attractive monuments in Sussex, interesting for its costume, especially for the curious headdress of the mother and her daughters.
