CHURCHES of SUSSEX
Slindon Monument
Here lies one of England's 100 wooden figures in our churches.
He is thought to be either Sir Anthony Kempe or Anthony St. Leger, both
16th century men. A splendid figure, he is lying under a window with the light
full on him, his hands in prayer, with neither sword nor spurs, his long hair
resting on a tilting helmet, his feet free, looking as if he had lain down
for a little rest. It is the only ancient effigy in Sussex, and is proudly
kept.
