CHURCHES of SUSSEX
Linchmere Monument
The treasure of Linchmere is a row of stone monks looking
anything but stone, beautifully carved over six centuries ago by an Italian
craftsman with a rich imaginative genius.
Here they are as a panel on the wall, each marble face
wearing an expression representing one of the Seven Deadly Sins of pride,
avarice, anger, envy, gluttony, lust and sloth.
Very true to life they are are, especially the three
suffering from Anger, Envy, and Sloth.
