CHURCHES of SUSSEX
Broadwater Monuments
Shorn of its ancient splendour in colour and gold, but still imposing, is
the tomb of Thomas West, the Lord de la Warr who built the splendid chantry
for himself at Boxgrove but was not allowed to lie in it; he was brought here
instead.
His proud house is in ruin, the tomb he built for himself is empty, and
here his helmet was once used as a poor-box; but he sleeps in a noble place.
On his tomb is a captivating pair of figures - the Madonna and St. George.

In the churchyard is a remarkable tombstone with a picture of the Day of
Judgement, showing the sea giving up its dead and the tower of this church
split in two.
