CHURCHES of SUSSEX
The Font at Pyecombe
The chief possession of Pyecombe is
its lead font, one of three in Sussex, the others being at Parham and Edburton.
It is one of the biggest lead fonts among the 38 still left in England,
being six feet round and 15 inches deep. It has a heavy fluted rim with arcading
below, a narrow band of scroll work round the middle and at the bottom another
arcade of 15 arches decorated with floral work.
It is one of the finest examples of Norman lead work, and is supposed to
have been made in 1170.
