CHURCHES of SUSSEX
St. Nicholas - Brighton
The most treasured and oldest possession of this church is the font. It
is thought to have come from Normandy in the time of William the Conqueror,
though for some apparently foolish reason it has an 18th century date inscribed
on it.
A magnificent piece of carving, it has 16 figures sculptured in four compartments,
one showing the baptism of Christ, another St. Nicholas, another the Last
Supper, another a boat with a furled sail and two people in it, like one of
the panels on the famous font at Winchester.
