CHURCHES of SUSSEX

Steyning Church Arch

The church has been called a fragment of Norman church, but what a fragment!

Its mighty arch is one of the finest Norman structures on English soil. It is 38 feet high, and, though it leads into a modern chancel with poor windows, nothing can destroy its appeal to the mind.

On its capitals is spirited carvings of lions with their tails joined together, terminating in scrolls of foliage, and there are figures of two men grasping the stems of trees. It has been said there is no richer Norman work in England on this scale. A nave of four magnificent arches leads up to it.
