CHURCHES of SUSSEX

Selham Church Arch

Here for about nine centuries have been reigning beauty and the beast. Beauty is in the tiny Saxon arch; the beast is the evil-looking creature on one of its capitals.

It is believed the Saxons built the arch under Norman direction about the very year the Normans came.

On one face of the arch are the marks of the three-pronged tool the Saxons used, but on the face of the massive stone from which the font was hewn are the marks of the five-pronged tool the Normans used.
