CHURCHES of SUSSEX
Peasmarsh Church Arch
Peasmarsh was begun by the Saxons, and the chancel
arch may have been made by Saxon craftsmen under Norman masters.
It has a primitive look about it, and sets you thinking of those old days
when artists in stone were fond of putting queer creatures in their walls,
perched on their towers, hiding under eaves, peeping out of foliage.
There are five of them here, two lions in red sandstone by the chancel arch,
both very odd and one biting his tail; another lion over the priest's door
outside the chancel wall, a stag with its antlers on a buttress near the ground,
and a queer bird on a buttress by the east window.
