CASTLES of SUSSEX

The motte lies hidden under the trees to the right of this photograph. It rises to a height of 25-30 ft and resembles a cone shape. This would have been the site of the earliest construction within the castle walls and was most probably used by the Saxons as a strategic defensive position.

Looking towards the Castle Motte

From the left of the photo you can just make out the remains of the curtain wall which rises to a height of 10-12 ft in places and up to 4ft wide. The view is north and directly behind the photographer (myself really), are the remains of the gate-tower.
