The Town of Battle
The town of Battle is like many Sussex towns and villages with it's main street
running alongside the abbey grounds and off into the weald. It was the Norman's
who called this place Battle, supposedly to intimidate the local population,
it has been known so as early as 1094. It is now a beautiful Sussex town full
of quaint and interesting buildings, shops and views.
There are several medieval and good 17th and 18th century buildings, many
of the latter being plaster-coated and hung with tiles. visit the Pilgrim's
Rest which is one of the town's most historic buildings and has early 15th century
timber framing. Good Inns and eating places abound for such a small town and
the quality is great.
Langton House, which dates from the 16th century, is the home of the 'Battle
Historical Society Museum'. Display's provide insight into the History of Sussex
from prehistoric times to the present day. There is also a replica of the 'Bayeux
Tapestry', a half-size version made in 1821, and also a diorama showing the
Battle of Hastings.
